Implementing a multiple-database xquery system

Abstract

Current data collection and storage methods in the scientific world lack standardization, compatibility, and interoperability. In an effort to combat this problem, we have selected XML databases and XML documents as the preferred storage media to capitalize on XML\'s non-proprietary and semantic-free nature. By using XML databases and documents, the scientific world now has a flexible way to standardize the collection and storage of data. This data must also be available to scientists in a distributed setting. To this end, we have proposed several basic network connectivity types and technologies that aid in the processes of performing a distributed XML database query. This system is called the cross query system and it must be built on top of a robust environment that can handle becoming part of the Open Grid Services Architecture (OGSA).

1. INTRODUCTION

In and out of academia, data collection and storage for scientists is still confined to proprietary and often incompatible formats; thus, severely limiting collaboration between bodies who wish to study or collect others' research data. The goal of the research into an XQuery cross query system is to transform scientific data, held in proprietary systems, into an XML standard format in which the data can be stored across multiple collection sites and yet remain accessible to anyone who wants to access that data. What the scientific world will see in this research is a means to store and select data from open-standard distributed systems.
