Production technology and properties of wire for dental prosthetic

Wtorek, 28 kwietnia

Abstract

Development in various areas of reconstruction and treatment surgery as well as prosthetics contributed to the increase in demand for wire and clamps, splints, bindings and wire seams, made of wire. Stainless wire is used in dental prosthetics to seat fixed partial denture and denture within oral cavity and to produce orthodontic devices.

This study presents selected examples of application of wire and wire products used in dental prosthetics and face and jaw surgery. A technology was designed that deals with production of “hard” wire with diameter of 1,0 mm, made of Cr-Ni steel. Mechanical and technological properties of wire have been tested. The tests proved validity of presented drawing theory, which justifies the use of wire in dental prosthetics.

1. Introduction

Metallic bio-materials are very important as face and jaw surgery is concerned. Metallic material used for production of bio-materials shall feature [4,6]:
- bio-tolerance,
- corrosion resistance,
- good durability,
- proper dielectric constant,
- resistance to abrasive wear,
- low manufacturing costs,
- susceptibility to mechanical working,
- certain taste and smell properties,
- durable aesthetic properties.

Many types of wire, bindings, splints, orthodontic devices have been improved and new structural solutions have been introduced. Currently wires or orthopaedic devices made of wire differ according to the following factors: basic role they play in the process of fracture treatment (positioning, immobilizing), place they are fastened to (intra-oral, extra-oral, combined), material they are made of (metal, acrylate and others) and production method (individual, standard).

Wire and wire products for face and jaw surgery are most frequently made of acid-proof steel Cr-Ni and Cr-Ni-Mo. This study presents selected examples of use of wire and wire products used in dental prosthetics and face and jaw surgery. A technology was designed that deals with production of “hard” wire with diameter of 1,0mm, made of steel of 1.4310 type.
