Properties of guide wires used in endourology

Wtorek, 28 kwietnia

Abstract

Interdisciplinary research that connects medicine and science, as well as production techniques and technologies, has resulted in dynamic developments in the endoscopic treatment of lithiasis and other urologic diseases. The success of the applied urologic treatment depends on the right solution to technological problems connected with the production of tools and instruments. Commonly used methods of endoscopic treatment are percutaneous nephrostomy, ureterorenoscopy, and percutaneous nephrolithotripsy. This paper presents information concerning the characteristics of guide wires used in endourology. The measurement was made by means of computer-aided quantitative metallography and the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the chemical constitution. The mechanical and technological properties of the wire were determined. The production technology of a select guide wire is provided.

1. Introduction

Interdisciplinary research that connects medicine and science, as well as production techniques and technologies has resulted in dynamic developments in the endoscopic treatment of lithiasis and other urologic diseases. Endourology is a branch of urology concerned with diagnostics and treatment performed within the area of the urinary tract by means of endoscopic equipment. The essence of endourological treatment in urolithiasis is to reach the stones using special devices and to remove them unbroken or crush them and remove smaller pieces. Nowadays most patients who need to have uroliths removed are treated with so called low-invasive methods – extracorporeal shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL) and endourological treatment, i.e. PCNL (percutaneous nephrolithotripsy) and URS (ureterorenoscopy) [1+/-3]. Transdermal renal fistula (TRF) is one of the ways of over-urinary bladder urine drainage.

This method is used in diagnostic as well as treatment; it serves both: to drain urine from kidney and create alternative access to upper urinary tracts [4]. This paper presents information concerning the characteristics of treatments and guide wires used in nephrostomy, percutaneous nephrolithotripsy and ureterorenoscopy. The measurement of the wires was made by means of computer-aided quantitative metallography and the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the chemical constitution was made using an electron-scanning microscope with a field emission FE SEM S 4200 HITACHI in combination with a Voyager 3500 NORAN INSTRUMENTS spectrometer. The mechanical and technological properties of the wire were determined thanks to an Instron resistance-measuring machine. The production technology of a select guide wire is provided.
